This is very plausible. In fact it happens in the business world all the time. Twice now I’ve been hired into an IT department with big structural problems, but with only the vague direction that they “Wanted me to identify issues and make changes as I saw fit”. Didn’t take long for me to realize everyone knew the dept was broken but they didn’t want their opinion of what the problem was to affect my decisions on what changes to make.
Its also a good strategy to identify what type of director that person will be.. Will they just continue the status quo and treat it like an easy cushy job? Or will they roll up their sleeves, make the hard decisions and changes that are necessary without someone telling them to do it?
